NarrativeJames H. Youngquist entered the Army through the Officer Candidate School program in early 1970. Following Basic Training and Combat Engineer Advanced Individual Training at Fort Leonard, MO, he attended the six-month Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, GA and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant on 9 July 1971. The first nearly four years were spent on Active Duty. This was followed by several years as a Troop Program Unit (TPU) member in the Army Reserve. The last eighteen years (1983 until retirement in June 2001) were spent as an Active Guard Reserve (AGR) officer with the Army Reserve. This included an assignment with the Army Reserve Headquarters (1994-95), an Army War College Fellowship at the University of Texas - Austin (1995-96), promotion to Colonel at a ceremony in the Pentagon, and a three year assignment with the Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel (DCSPER), Department of the Army (DA) staff at the Pentagon (1996-99). Colonel Youngquist was inducted into the Officer Candidate School Hall of Fame in 1999. |
